The higher the relative humidity of the air, the faster strings corrode. Your strings face two enemies: the sweat and oils your hands leave on them while you play, and the humid air they sit exposed to between sessions. Wiping your strings down with a lint-free microfiber cloth (or a string cleaner) after every session helps with the first — but it doesn't solve the second: even freshly cleaned strings are left exposed to the air, and humidity immediately goes back to work on the metal.
